Yoplait & Sugar

What type of sugar is in Yoplait yogurts?
The product pages of this website contain nutrition panels that include the total sugar content for each Yoplait yogurt. The total sugar is made up of both natural and added sugars.

The natural sugars in Yoplait yogurt come from the milk sugar 'lactose' and the fruit sugar 'fructose'.

Yoplait Original and Yoplait Lite also contain some added sugar called 'sucrose'.

Yoplait formé contains a small amount of 'artificial sweeteners', as well as fructose, and has less than 1% added sugar in total.

How much sugar is in Yoplait formé yogurt?

Does Yoplait formé yogurt contain 'artificial sweeteners'?
Yes, Yoplait formé yogurt contains two 'sweeteners'. These are:

  1. Acesulphame K (950) - the same sweetener as used in Sunett. It is 200 times sweeter than table sugar or sucrose.
  2. Aspartame (951) - the same sweetener as used in NutraSweet or Equal, and is about 200 times as sweet as table sugar or sucrose.

These sweeteners are added to Yoplait formé yogurt in only the minimum quantity required to achieve sweetness.

What is phenylalanine?
One of the 'sweeteners' in Yoplait formé no fat yogurt is Aspartame, which contains phenylalanine.

Phenylalanine is an amino acid and one of the building blocks that makes up protein. It is found in protein-containing foods such as meats, grains and dairy products.

Some people are unable to break down phenylalanine, so it is important to clearly label products accordingly.

Always seek individual nutrition advice from your health care practitioner about any specific needs you may have.
